Trish Davidson

Founder and campaigner, Unchosen

Trish is a tireless campaigner who won the Extraordinary Personal Contribution award at the Extraordinary Women Awards in 2009 for her work in raising people's awareness about the horrific practice called human trafficking.  She set up her organisation Unchosen in 2008 which campaigns to raise awareness of Human Trafficking.

Human Trafficking – which includes people being forced into the UK to work and be exploited – has become the second largest illegal industry worldwide, behind only the arms trade.

The concept for "Unchosen" came about when Minister Stephen Newell and a group from his youth group organised a service called Stopthetraffik in May 2007. They invited along a nurse from Bristol, Ruth, who was just about to go and serve in Cambodia, with an organisation called Daughters. Daughters is a charity which looks after young girls aged 4 – 14 who have been sold into the sex trade primarily by their families. Trish says, “I knew then I had to do something, the mixture of poverty and human frailty simply broke my heart.”

Trish Davidson

It was whilst attending the Dublin Film Festival with her husband later in 2007 that Trish realised how she could help to make people aware of this human tragedy. Good documentaries based on thoroughly researched content can bring a succinct and clear message to a large audience and by not charging an admission could attract a complete cross section of people as an audience.

Nick Broomfield is the film festival's patron and regularly and gives talks about his work; his backing is a massive support for Unchosen.  At the inaugural festival in 2008 Nick praised festival founder Trish Davidson for "courageously" putting together the unique event. "The film festival tackles a tough subject none of us like to face, but sitting idly by and imagining it isn't happening is not an option for Trish or the team."

November 2009 saw the 2nd film festival in Bristol where more than 1,150 people attended. 2010 brings a further season in Bristol, also Bath and possibly Dublin.

Unchosen also facilitates meetings between the Police, City Council, University’s, NGOs to bring about the forming of ACT groups, Active Communities Against Trafficking.
